Suez Canal - Transit

Vessel arrived of Port Said on Friday 1st Februart 2008,
After anchoring to await our turn to proceed in, we eventually
arrived in the harbour at 1.ooam the following day.
Once we had cleared immigration and customs (at much cost to the
onboard cigarette locker!!), we eventually joined our convoy at 3.30am.
Due to it being night time, not many photos could be taken. So the
following photo's are when the vessel was at anchor in the Bitter Lake,
which looked more like a ships version of NCP car parks!! Due to a
container ship running aground and blocking one channel.....

That is the culprit, circled. Better not give out the name of the vessel.

Unfortunetly due to the fact that the ship has run aground, the rest of
the transit will be done in darkness. So that is all to see in the Suez Canal....
Next stop will be Salahal in Oman, to pick up one person, and a few
essential items, but will not be going alongside.....yet!!!
Till then......

On our way to India

Vessel left Dundee on the evening of the 20th January to
much relief for all the crew onboard. After many months
of waiting.
We made our way down to the English Channel before entering
the Bay of Biscay, with good weather ahead. Came through
Gibraltar Strait, and you could feel the weather getting warmer
all the time.
Our first port of call was Valetta in Malta, for a crew change,
replenish fresh store, and a quick run ashore!

Approaching Valetta Port.

Looks like we have gone back a 1000 years to Roman times!

One of the 3 old cities.

Second (foreground) and third of the old cities.

Lots of these old stone steps around the city.
Don't want to come back late at night, after a few beers!

Another view.

Skandi Achiever berthed alongside in Valetta, Malta.

Looking out towards the sea.

After just over 9 hours in port the vessel sailed at 2100 on
the 29th Jan to Suez for the Canal Transit. Can't wait!!!!!!!
Till then........

My new ship DSV 'Skandi Achiever'

Vessel currently in Dundee, having the Dive System installed and comissioned.

After this, vessel has a short job in the North Sea, before sailing down to India.

New vessel, New Company

Hi folks,

It's been a while since i last updated the blog!!! sorry.
Well I left the Rockwater 2 in Dampier, Australia. In the middle of October 07, and to my surprise, it was for the last time.....

I have since moved on to a Norwegian company called DOF. They are building a lot of new ships, and are requiring lots of new crew. So a move to a new ship was inevitable.
Pictures to follow.

Rockwater 2, to the rescue of a British yacht.

We were asked to deviate from our course by RCC Australia, as a yacht had gone aground on a reef and was taking on water.
During the day we started preparing the boats, so we could launch them when we got on the scene. Only to be told a few hours later that they are sending helicopters out to rescue the lone British sailor. We were to stand-by on the scene in-case they could not do it.
Fortunetly the helicopter was able to reach him.
And not one word was mentioned in the worlds press about us!!!!!

p.s. The warship did not turn up. We was the only ship around.

Yacht stuck on the reef.

Rescue helicopter arrives on the scene.

Away he goes.

Actual article from Reuters

Thu Aug 2, 2007 5:53AM BST

CANBERRA (Reuters) - An Australian warship is sailing to rescue a lone British yachtsman whose vessel ran aground on a reef east of the Australian mainland, rescue officials said.
The sailor's yacht sent a distress signal at 5 p.m. (8 a.m. British time) on Wednesday and a navy frigate sailed on Thursday morning from south of Sydney.
The yacht ran aground on Elizabeth Reef, 100 nautical miles (185 km) north of Lord Howe Island, a spokeswoman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority told Reuters.
"There is one British man about the yacht, named the "Lamachan"," she told Reuters.
Lord Howe Island is 600 km (373 miles) off the mainland's east coast.
A catamaran remained near the yacht, while two search-and-rescue aircraft were circling, the spokeswoman said. A merchant vessel (US) had also been diverted.
The frigate HMAS Ballarat was expected be close enough to the yacht to send a helicopter by around 4 p.m. (7 a.m. British time) and winch the man aboard.
"The yacht is taking on water and is in danger of breaking up in heavy seas and strong winds," Defence spokesman Brigadier Andrew Nikolic told journalists in Canberra.
Elizabeth Reef is at latitude 29°56'S and longitude 159°05'E, and is regarded as one of the southernmost coral reefs in the world.
